\open{Dear Pat,}
Thanks for the letter and clippings.
Stanford also has a computerized library catalog.
It can be reached from any computer on campus, and I can
reach it at home. Its bad feature is that so far it only
includes books acquired since 1973. Several times students
have told me that a book wasn't in the library when it was.
I don't watch television at all now. I can't exactly
say why, except that I'm too impatient. As for cold fusion,
there doesn't seem to be a lot of hope, but there's some.
I am one of those in Zadeh's own country who has
been ignoring fuzzy logic for 20 years and plans to
continue. Actually, I have my own nostrum for some
forms of fuzziness, namely nonmonotonic reasoning,
but I haven't got around to comparing it with
fuzziness in the area where there is overlap.
I have been taking the optimist's view of chaos.
If small events can have large effects on events, then
large events are in principle controllable, e.g. the
weather. No one at all seems to have studied this
question.
\close{Regards,}
